A Wood County man is in jail for abducting two men and torturing them in his home for days.

46-year-old Edward Lanphear is being held in the Wood County jail on $1 million bond. According to court documents, a man in chains escaped from Lanphear's home and went to a neighbor's house to call police.

When police went to the home, they found another man who was chained up in the house, and told them he was being held against his will. That victim told police Lanphear impersonated a police officer and then handcuffed him, and beat him unconscious. The victim told officers he woke up chained in a basement, and was sexually assaulted numerous times by Lanphear.

Court documents say Lanphear then tied a string from a shotgun to the chains to prevent the victim from escaping.

Wisconsin authorities say they'll conduct extensive research to see if Lanphear might be linked to other cases.

Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert says his agency will conduct an "exhaustive" investigation into Lanphear's background and cross-reference him with other missing persons cases. He says other law enforcement agencies likely will do the same.

Online court records show nothing for Lanphear except a divorce.

NewsCenter 13's policy is to not release the identity of sexual assault victims, so the men's names are not included in this story. Original stories did include the name of one of the missing men, but those stories have been removed because of the nature of the alleged crimes.
