Authorities say the man who was found dead in the back seat of a car during a traffic stop accidentally shot himself.

The Portage County Sheriff's Department says the gun shot sustained by Travis Mills on Saturday was self-inflicted.

The 27-year-old from Almond was shot with a small-caliber handgun about three hours before the traffic stop in Stevens Point. The driver was pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving, and authorities say the driver claimed he was on his way to a hospital.

The driver -- 46-year-old Adrian Facundo -- was cited for operating while intoxicated and operating after license revocation.
