The Eau Claire Police Department has a new way to stop speeders. It's a tool officers say is ready for your neighborhood if you need it.
The new $6000 machine can pinpoint when a certain street has the most speeders. And it didn't cost the city a dime.
The flashing numbers are nothing new. But, open up this new speed machine and you'll find a computer that's ready to record.
"If we put it out for two or three days, it will collect the speed and the time logged. Then, we can bring it back here download it and it gives us a readout down to the hours, days and times," says Eau Claire Police Officer Jason Kaveney.
That way the department can strategically stick officers in places to slow down speeders. They already have some problem areas pegged.
"Because of the construction on Clairemont Avenue, we were wondering how many people are going around it and how fast they are going," Kaveney says.
People living just south of the construction say when the cones went up so did the number of cars in their neighborhoods.
"It’s an increase definitely. It's a lot louder at night."
"Sometimes they go fast. Sometimes they're really good about it. But, there is more traffic, definitely."
They say anything that can slow down traffic is a welcome sight on their street.
Officer Kaveney says a AAA grant covered the $6000. Anyone interested in having it set up in their neighborhood can call the department at 839-4993.
