"Theft Alert" Proposed To Protect Wisconsin Scrap Metal Dealers

Wisconsin recyclers are proposing what could be the first statewide theft alert system.

They're trying to stop what's called an epidemic of scrap metal theft.

Recycling companies want to use the Internet to record scrap metal purchases and report the information to law enforcement agencies.

Scrap yards are sometimes used to fence stolen goods. And, metal collectors are cashing in on record high prices.

Under the alert system, recyclers and police would exchange information through the Internet or dedicated computer terminals.

Forman Metal Company president Marty Forman says all sorts of things that aren't nailed down are finding their way to recyclers.
