A 48-year-old man from Eden Prairie was sentenced on Tuesday to one year of probation and a $2,938 fine for making a false statement about a black bear he hunted and killed in Wisconsin.
Walter Palmer is a licensed hunter who had authorization to hunt black bears in Subzone A1 in northern Wisconsin. However he killed a black bear near Phillips in Price County, 40 miles outside of the regulated zone.
Palmer and other members of the group he was hunting with agreed to tell the DNR that he had killed the bear off Taylor Lake Road south of Minong if questions were asked.
Palmer filed a Bear Registration Stub falsely stating the bear had been killed in Subzone A1 and had the bear carcass transported from Wisconsin to Minnesota.
An investigation by U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Wisconsin DNR proved Palmer falsely stated the location of the killing.
Palmer pleaded guilty to the charge in April of this year.
