Some Wisconsinites behind on their winter heating bills will have an extra month this year to avoid disconnection of their service.
Despite the reprieve for Xcel Energy customers, thousands of people face losing their power in mid-April unless they pay their electric and gas bills. State regulators ban utilities from disconnecting customers from November first to April 15th.
Xcel Energy based in Eau Claire says it's extending its own moratorium on cutoffs until May 15th after last week's announcement that Wisconsin will get another 26 million dollars in federal heating assistance. The utility says that'll give the state time to distribute the additional money.
