A local hospital is opening its doors and showing you the future of emergency medical care.

The new emergency and urgent care building at Franciscan Skemp Hospital in La Crosse isn't open to the public yet but it’s letting people get a sneak peek. The newly renovated building on the corner of West Avenue and Market Street cost about $9 million dollars to build and will combine the hospital’s emergency room and urgent care services.

Sue McBride, the emergency care director, says the advantage to having both services combined into one is patients don't have to guess where to go based on the seriousness of their situation.

"Often patients are confuses about how sick they are, what type of service they need. When they arrive here they'll come through one door, they'll be seen by a nurse who will ask them some simple questions and sort out what type of service they need."

The emergency and urgent care building will officially open August 6th.
