Wisconsin has a scholarship program that awards up to $2,250 per year to high scoring high school students who choose to attend state schools, but the 2005 Elmwood valedictorian didn't qualify because he wasn't seeking a bachelor or associate degree.
A bill signed earlier this month changed the scholarship requirements because Jon Bauer is studying woodworking. Bauer is thankful he could make a difference not only for himself, but those that will follow him seeking technical diplomas.
"We need people to do trade work. It's not all about going to school and being a doctor," says Bauer. "We need people to design things and stuff, and this part of this program; we do drafting."
He does much more than just that. In the first eight weeks of his program he built both an entertainment center and grandfather clock.
