La Crosse Man Claims Insanity When He Stabbed A Police Officer

A La Crosse man has entered an insanity plea on charges that he stabbed a police officer with a screwdriver before another officer shot him during a traffic stop in March of last year.

Twenty-three-year-old Joseph Smith entered the plea Wednesday of not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Authorities say he used the screwdriver to attack Officer Jon Wenger during the traffic stop. The other officer then shot him twice.

Smith came to court in a wheelchair. He remains jailed in lieu of $250,000 cash bond.
