A 3-year-old boy from Nerstrand, MN died after being shot in the head by his sister as she played with a gun.

The Rice County Sheriff's Office says the 6-year-old girl was playing with a handgun the children had found in an unlocked nightstand at their home in the small town east of Faribault.

The boy was flown to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he was pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The names of the victim and the young girl weren't immediately released.

Every one says Lock up the guns/hide them away from kids..... kids are curious, they will play w/it given a chance...... Take them out back/ to the country and show them how to blow a huge hole in something beside each other.. they will understand this is not a toy..it is loud, kicks like a mule. and not to be played with... if they want to show their friends make it understood you wiil do it not them......respect for the gun wins over curiosity every time....

My prayers go out to both the parents and the children. The big tragedy is this is something that CAN be avoided, there are so many precautions that can be taken to avoid a hand gun getting into the hands of a child. Saddly that point is mute now.

--------------------------------------- I understand why the gun was not locked --------------------------------------- Why? The side arm in my bedroom is in a Brinks fire safe that I could access in about 10 seconds. Yet given its location and 5 digit code is not feasibly accessible to the children. Regardless a sad situation that certainly warrants my thoughts and prayers.

My heart also goes out to this family. I understand why the gun was not locked and did not have a trigger lock on it, yet I understand the other side as well. My question is, did the parents drill it into the kid(s) not to touch the guns? What about the "Stay out of Mom and Dad's room" and "Do not go in our drawers" and the like. Did they teach them any of those rules?

Those who own firearms are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to have a lock on their guns. This is the type tragety that happens! I feel for the family! Especially what the 6 yr old will feel as she grows up!
