Wisconsin's Work Force Consists Of Two Percent Undocumented Immigrants

A new report says undocumented immigrants account for up to two percent of Wisconsin's 5.5 million residents.

The Pew Hispanic Center says the state has 75,000 to 115,000 illegal immigrants. The estimate puts Wisconsin at number 21 among states in terms of immigrant population.

United Migrant Opportunity Services spokesman Rod Ritcherson says undocumented immigrants in Wisconsin tend to work in hotels, construction, landscaping, home repair and roofing. He says most are from Mexico.

Experts say the state's proximity to Chicago has driven a recent increase in the population. Chicago is a major immigration destination.

The center used the Census Bureau's current population survey for its calculations.
