Gays Mills Marks One-Year Anniversary of Floods

GAYS MILLS, Wis. (AP) -- Last year's flood devastated their town, but residents of Gays Mills say they'll mark the one-year anniversary with a sense of optimism.

The Kickapoo River in southwest Wisconsin overran its banks Aug. 20 of last year, damaging more than 75 homes. The town of 625 residents was hit again by floods in June, displacing dozens of people.

So residents plan to turn out Sunday to "Flood Daze" for food, games and music.

Rev. Pam Lojewski is the pastor of the local Luther Memorial Church. She says the last year was hard on the town, and many have been living with relatives or in apartments while their homes are repaired.

She says Gays Mills has become a depressing place to live, and she hopes Sunday's event will lift people's spirits.
