Police in Rice Lake are taking over what their Chief calls an arson and murder investigation.
A fire in a Main Street apartment killed a man and a woman early Saturday morning, and injured at least three more people.
It started around 5:20 a.m. in a unit of a single story complex. While on their way to the scene, rescue crews learned there were two people trapped inside the burning apartment and one person outside the complex who turned out to be critically burned.
Rice Lake Fire Department Chief, James Resac says the fire was under control in a relatively short amount of time. Crews were able to put out the fire in about 25 minutes.
Resac says the investigative process is being treated as a criminal investigation due to the fatalities involved.
Two men and one woman were also taken to the hospital with injuries, but there is no word on their condition.
Police plan to release more information on Monday afternoon.
