Forest bans firewood south of Wausau
The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is banning firewood from the southern two-thirds of Wisconsin, not just wood from out of state.

You may want to think twice before lighting up a bonfire at certain campsites.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is banning firewood from the southern two-thirds of Wisconsin, not just wood from out of state.

Forest officials say they're taking the firewood ban a step further because the destructive emerald ash borer has recently been found in Ozaukee and Washington counties.

The forest doesn't want firewood imported from anywhere south of Highway 29, stretching from Green Bay to the east and Prescott to the west.

Forest Service spokesman Mark Theisen says they won't be able to check every campsite, but campers who disregard the rule can be fined.

Chequamegon-Nicolet has more than 1,100 campsites throughout the 1.5 million acre forest.
