The mayor of Prairie du Chien has been charged in Iowa with second-offense drunken driving after authorities said he drove his car into a ditch.
Forty-two-year-old Karl K. Steiner is also charged with failing to maintain control of a vehicle. He was charged Thursday in Clayton County Court in Elkader, Iowa.
According to the criminal complaint, a motorist reported a vehicle driving erratically. Prosecutors say police later found Steiner's car in a ditch, and that Steiner smelled of alcohol.
The complaint says he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.273 percent, more than three times the legal limit in Iowa.
He was previously convicted of drunken driving in Florida in 2002.
