A reward is being offered in the case of a murdered college student

Brittany Zimmermann, 21, was found dead in her off-campus apartment five blocks from the state capitol in Madison on April 2. Investigators say the door had been forced open and it appeared to be a random crime.

Police said Thursday that a $5,000 reward from the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Foundation is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Zimmermann's relatives say they hope the reward will grow with additional donations.

Rewards seem like nice ideas yet I can not recall a news report that said the case was solved because the reward was a motivating factor for someone. I just wonder how effective rewards are?
