CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) -- State Representative Jeff Wood, who upset Republican leaders by defecting from the GOP and becoming an independent over the summer, will have an opponent from his former party in the November election.

The three-term incumbent from rural Chetek was the only candidate on the ballot for Tuesday's primary in the 67th Assembly District.

But hundreds of primary voters cast write-in ballots for Republican Don Moga.

He needed 485 write-in votes to reach the ballot. Chippewa County Clerk Kathy Bernier said he had 771 with all of the precincts reporting. She said the final votes won't be tallied until Wednesday.

Wood claimed he was blacklisted by GOP leaders because he was too independent, and they put him on a do-nothing committee.

He left the party too late for the GOP to get a replacement on Tuesday's ballot.
