River Falls Student Dies From Bacterial Meningitis

Minnesota State University, Mankato, has released the name of the student who died of bacterial meningitis.

Katlyn Feriancek is a first-year student from rural River Falls, Wisconsin.

The university says her father gave the school permission to release her name.

The university says Feriancek went home on May 12th after finishing the spring semester. A Twin Cities area hospital diagnosed her with bacterial meningitis on May 13th. She died Thursday.

Feriancek's father told the school she was vaccinated against meningitis, but not against the strain of bacterial meningitis with which she was infected.

The Department of Health believes her case is isolated.

The university says it plans to create a condolences Web page for Feriancek.

Health officials encourage all college students to get vaccinated.
