Wisconsin Hits 50th Year In A Row As Nation's Top Papermaker

Wisconsin is the top producer of paper in the US for the 50th year in a row.

The Wisconsin Paper Council said today state mills generated more than five million tons of paper in 2003 -- the most recent year for which data are available.

Maine ranks second with three and a-half million tons.

The trade group says the paper industry is facing lower demand and increasing competition from overseas.

Council president Patrick Schillinger says while there have been job cuts and streamlining in the industry, production is still high.
