Madison alderman wants to fight porn by expanding it.

An alderman in Madison wants to fight porn by expanding it.

Alderman Tim Bruer says he'll ask the City Council on Tuesday to increase locations in the city where adult entertainment stores can operate.

Bruer says city zoning law is now so strict the stores could mount a challenge alleging the city is violating the right to free speech. Easing the restrictions would take away that weapon.

Bruer says once that's done, he'll ask the city to more aggressively enforce restrictions on adult entertainment stores calling themselves "gift shops." Under current law, gift shops can sell adult material as long as less than ten percent of the floor and display place is used for it.

Bruer says the porn shops have been manipulating that law and the city is too afraid the shops would mount a constitutional challenge if it did.
