The local American Cancer Society is releasing a DVD it hopes will educate the Hmong community about cancer.
The group recently started sending the DVD -- "Health Crosses a Culture" -- to local health care providers. It plans to place free copies in the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association and air segments on local television's "Hmong News" for two months.
The film promotes prevention and early detection for the population, which may not be clued in to health topics like cancer, community members say. Before most Hmong came to the US, they lived in countries such as Laos and Thailand, where health care wasn't strong.
The cancer society's Deb Imrie says health organizations outside the area have become interested in the DVD, suggesting a need for more translations and other efforts.
