Man Caught In Online Sex Sting Found Not Guilty
50-Year-Old Wisconsin Rapids Man Did Not Show Intent

An appeals court says a Wisconsin man who had a sexually explicit online chat with an investigator posing as an eighth grade girl did not commit a crime.

Eric Olson of Wisconsin Rapids had pleaded no contest to using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime but later challenged his conviction, saying he was not guilty of that crime.

To be convicted, a person must show intent to have sex with a child beyond simply communicating over the Internet.

In this case, prosecutors argued the 50-year-old demonstrated his intent when he used his Web camera to transmit video of himself shirtless from the chest up.

The District 4 Court of Appeals says that doesn't satisfy the requirements of the crime and Olson can withdraw his plea.
