One fire department wants to expand its hands-on training program for teens and young adults.

Altoona has had a Fire Explorers post since 1990.

"It definitely gives you a taste of what its like,” said Altoona Fire Department Captain Jason Knecht.

Capt. Knecht says Altoona’s Fire Explorers Post 800 – which is a division of the Boy Scouts – is open to boys and girls ages 14 to 21; although you don’t have to be a scout to participate.

Explorers train side-by-side with Altoona firefighters – learning real-life fire and EMS response tactics. They train every Tuesday.

"Start them off with orientation and they do ladder training, hose training, search and rescue,” Capt. Knecht said.

"I've done some of their water rescue with them, ice training, two weeks ago we did on-scene lighting,” Explorer Jordan Prete said.

"I've learned obviously all the trucks and I've learned a lot of stuff about how to run the hose and stuff,” added Explorer Mike Kelly. “All the basics."

It’s a program that’s giving Explorers a jump-start on their career goals.

"I think that working either here in Altoona or for Eau Claire would be ok,” Kelly said.

"Usually at 18 they join the fire department,” Capt. Knecht said. “We've had quite a few explorers become firefighters."

Including Capt. Knecht himself – who’s spent 17 years with the department.

"It provides a good basis for any type of emergency services or any sort of government work too,” he said.

Once the Explorers get enough training, Capt. Knecht says they may end up helping out at a real fire.

"Not in any sort of danger, but they can help us run tools back and forth,” Capt. Knecht said. "They can help in the command post."

Giving the Explorers a few small steps – towards some big goals.
"It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it definitely teaches you everything you need to know,” Kelly said.

Capt. Knecht says there is a one-time fee of $8 to cover insurance – and Explorers have to maintain a “B” average in school.
