The city of Greenfield is charging $500 each time the fire department responds to a traffic accident.

City officials say the charge applies for life-saving services -- such as extricating people from vehicles or putting out car fires. Fire Chief Russ Spahn says the fees have brought in about $60,000, but he says that's only a fraction of the fire budget. He says tax dollars don't cover all their costs, especially since it's getting more expensive to maintain aging equipment.

Chris Keske tells WTMJ TV in Milwaukee he got a bill after the fire department cleaned up the road after an accident he was in. He says he was "aggravated" by the bill, but he got the fee waived after he complained.
