Officials monitoring teen drug abuse around La Crosse

Health officials are closely monitoring teens in western Wisconsin, where they say use of stolen prescription pills is rising.
>
La Crosse counselor Todd Hoffe says the abuse of pharmaceutical and over-the-counter drugs has steadily increased. He says it's the third most abused substance in his teen patients after marijuana and alcohol.
>
A recent study by The Partnership for a Drug-Free America says nearly one-in-five teens has tired prescription medication. La Crosse School District Nursing Coordinator Lynda Narish Johnson says prescription medications are highly guarded and regulated there.
>
She says parents are asked to deliver the drugs to the health office in the original medication container with a written note from the doctor and officials store the drugs in a locked cabinet administered by trained health assistants.
