Disabled kids in the Chippewa Valley are taking what some counselors hope will be a step toward their independence later in life.
They're learning to ride bicycles during a five-day camp in Altoona.
The camp has been held in River Falls for several years, but this is the first summer it's been offered in Altoona.
More than two-dozen children are practicing on bikes equipped with rollers for back wheels, though volunteers don't want them practicing at home this week.
"We want to make sure their brain has enough time to process all the things that we're doing," said Director Sue Tarr. "It's a pretty intense thinking process."
The campers' parents pay $100 to enroll their kids, though some are offered financial assistance.
