Polls are open on this election day in Wisconsin.

State election officials predict a record turnout as voters cast their ballots for president, Congress, the Legislature and some local referendum issues.

By the time the polls close tonight, about 3.2 million people are expected to have cast ballots in Wisconsin.

That would be about three-quarters of the voting age population and 91 percent of the registered voters. The previous highest number of votes cast was 3 million in November 2004. Eau Claire County election official say a turnout of 95% is not out of reach.

Polling places have been gearing up to deal with big crowds of voters, even though thousands have already cast absentee ballots that will also be counted after the polls are closed.

There are 35,000 election workers ready to staff the polls across the state.

Polling places are open until 8 p.m.
