The Department of Natural Resources says a plan to draw down the Mill Pond near an aging dam will be postponed.
The DNR says it has information from a public meeting last month that shows there is more sediment in the pond than expected. It says the sediment makes it less likely that the dam will fail.
The dam is on Rock Creek, which is a tributary to the Chippewa River. It’s next to a county park near Rock Falls. DNR engineers inspected it in June and August and found it's in poor condition. In September, engineers said there were leaking on both sides of the dam, and that the bedrock supporting it was weathered.
The DNR says a full drawdown of the flowage is likely to happen in the spring. Public meetings are expected to be scheduled before the spring thaw.
