Compromised Reached Over Voter Registration Issue

The state Elections Board Thursday reached a compromise on how it will deal with people who show up at the polls on Election Day and want to register to vote.

The new rule would require a person seeking to register at the polls to produce their driver's license. If they have it, they will be allowed to register.

If they don't have their license, they could instead cast a provisional ballot.

They would then have until 4:00pm the day after the election to provide their driver's license number to the polling station in order to have the provisional ballot count. If they can't produce it, the ballot will be disqualified.

Republicans had been critical of an earlier approach that would have allowed a person to register to vote without their driver's license.

State Republican Party director Rick Wiley calls today's board action a step in the right direction.
