The murder of Alisha Sidie reminds one deputy sheriff of a similar disappearance in a rural area. It’s a cold case that’s more than fourteen years old.
In October of 1994, Shannon Salisbury disappeared into the night. La Crosse County sheriff’s captain Kurt Papenfuss says this case reminds him of the Alisha Sidie case.
"The cases are really extremely similar,” says Papenfuss. “They're both involving women in their twenties, both in rural locations, both allegedly left after an altercation with their significant other."
Although investigators have found no evidence, Papenfuss says Salisbury’s boyfriend at the time, Harold Stankey is to this day a suspect, and Papenfuss believes he had something to do with the disappearance.
"He said that she had left the residence after an argument. He waited a day or two because he thought she would return on her own."
Papenfuss says at the time investigators searched many areas near West Salem with no luck.
"We've checked various tips that have come in over the years. We've received notification from other states where an unknown female body has been recovered and all with negative results."
Salisbury's family still keeps in contact with Papenfuss who says both groups have an idea of what happened.
"They suspect certain things and we suspect certain things but there has been no arrest and no body found."
The Salisbury case may be fourteen years old but Papenfuss says he still wants to solve it.
"Our goal in law enforcement is to make sure that someone doesn't get away with a murder and I believe this is a murder."
