Investigators say two men posing as peace officers spent a night pulling people over, then posted a video of it on YouTube.
Monroe County Sheriff Dennis Pedersen says two Sparta men pretended to be cops and spent Tuesday night pulling people over. A tip to the real officers put both men behind bars.
"They recognized one of the parties on there," says Pedersen.
Pedersen says 20-year-old Cody Hobson and 21-year-old Ronald Lyons drove a car fitted with red and blue LED lights. He says not only did they pull cars over, they taped it and put the video on YouTube.
"I can understand how a member of the motoring public would assume rightly so that a flashing red and blue light is a police officer. Really I found it to be offensive professionally and personally."
No one was hurt when the two men pulled them over but Pedersen says it was dangerous.
"What if that person ran off the road? What if that person attempted to stop alongside the road and ended up crashing the vehicle? You could also have a situation where you have a confrontation."
He says if you ever wonder if you're dealing with a real officer there are things you can do.
"If you're ever in a situation where you suspect that the person that's trying to stop you just doesn't look right, there is something not right about this, is you have a cell phone, call 911."
Both men appeared in court Monday and Pedersen says he just hopes these crimes don't hurt the reputation of law enforcement.
"All they do is erode that trust we ask for from the public. To trust that we need to have them stop in these circumstances."
Hobson and Lyons are both charged with being party to the crimes of false imprisonment, impersonating a peace officer and disorderly conduct.
