MN Smokers Head To WI for Cigarettes
While firefighters praise cigarettes that go out on their own, smokers in southeast Minnesota are driving to Wisconsin for regular smokes. Posted: 10:51 AM Dec 2, 2008Email Address: news@weau.com |

People in Minnesota are jumping the border, trying to find outlawed cigarettes. The move is a result of a new state law that went into effect this week.
Sales at the D&L Spur liquor store in Fountain City are up.
"It started on Monday, there were some people getting cartons," says owner Lynn Biesanz.
The spike is thanks to a new Minnesota law that only allows the sale of fire safe cigarettes in the state.
"We sold a couple more and I'm guessing it's going to get busier just because once the Minnesota stock runs out," says Biesanz.
Biesanz says most of her customers are frustrated with fire safe smokes because the cigarettes won't stay lit.
"They want to come over here and get the regular ones. It will get really busy here. We're hoping we can sell a lot of cigarettes like when the sales tax was down."
Ken Siebenaler owns Third Street Liquor in Winona. He says business hasn't dropped off but he is a smoker and says the new cigarettes are frustrating.
"I don't think it's going to change anything. It's just going to make people smoke more because they want to keep the cigarette burning. I know when it does go out and you re-light it, you've got a big ball of fire."
Siebenaler says you can't see the safety rings in the cigarettes just by looking at them, but you can check the bottom of the pack for the “FSC” marking.
"If somebody flips it out into the leaves, it's going to burn down to that certain point where the ring is on the paper and it could start the leaves on fire anyway."
While business may be good at D&L Spur right now, Biesanz is preparing for a change. Next year, Wisconsin will also make the switch to fire safe only cigarettes.
"It's just nice to see some of the old customers that used to come here all the time until Minnesota's cigarettes went down," she says.
Wisconsin will make the switch to fire safe cigarettes next October.
