Police are looking for the driver of a van involved in a deadly hit and run crash.
It happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday night in the town of Campbell, next to La Crosse.
Sergeant Tim Kelemen says 55-year-old William Harter of French Island was walking on the side of the road on Clinton Street near the bridge on French Island.
Kelemen says a van hit him and took off.
While Harter was lying in the road, cars in the opposite lane began flashing their headlights to try and warn oncoming drivers.
Kelemen says a Suburban was distracted by the headlights, and ran over Harter.
The Suburban driver stopped and called 911.
Kelemen says he was a victim of circumstance and won't face any criminal charges.
Harter was pronounced dead at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital.
Kelemen says officers are looking for a white GMC Safari van.
The van will be missing its right front turn signal and trim around the headlight.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Town of Campbell Police or CrimeStoppers.
