A 64-year-old Duluth woman whose body temperature dropped to a dangerous 60 degrees after she was stuck in the cold for hours has survived, and her recovery is amazing doctors.
Janice Goodger slipped in snow on the afternoon of Dec. 27 and wasn't found until 9 p.m. She was taken to St. Luke's hospital, but was near death. Her heart stopped beating.
Dr. Chris Delp said Goodger was so cold she felt like a corpse.
Shocking a heart back into rhythm when it is so cold is dangerous. So doctors warmed her body and blood before restarting her heart. Once the muscle was shocked, it began beating normally.
From there, Goodger's recovery was quick, and she went home within days. She says she doesn't feel much different.
Delp said doctors, paramedics and everyone involved did the right things.
