The growing number of prisoners in the state will require more than $1 billion dollars in renovations and construction. The $1.2 billion dollar pricetag came out in a new study by the state. The study shows the state needs 9,000 new beds and about 2,500 replacement beds.

The report shows Wisconsin hasn't had any major improvements for aging facilities or overcrowded prisons in the last 12 to 15 years, and many prisons are in poor shape. An example, the report found the perimeter fence, security systems and cameras at the prison in Stanley are not adequate and in poor condition.
