Emergency response teams from all over Western Wisconsin practiced how to safely rescue people from hybrid cars on Saturday.
First responders from 14 different counties met at Chippewa Valley Technical College. They learned about how the extreme voltage from hybrid car batteries can make it difficult to get people out of cars that have crashed, and how they have to adjust their rescues.
Though some crews have had this training before, Scott Burkart with the Eau Claire fire department says it’s always good to have a refresher.
"There's really nothing standardized in the industry now with the new technology and hybrid cars, alternative fuels, everything that's out there now, it really changes the way we have to look at vehicles,” says Burkhart.
Crews also learned that airbags can still deploy in hybrid cars after the engine is shut off because the battery power is still on.
