Wildlife Thrill Killings: Snowmobile Rider Reacts
"It reflects badly on snowmobiling. But, snowmobiling is a great sport." -- Jerry Vetterkind, Eau Claire Co. Snowmobile Association

The leader of an area snowmobile group says some riders are giving the sport a bad image.
This season, police say a handful of snowmobilers have hit and killed more than one-hundred ducks and five deer in eastern Wisconsin.
Jerry Vetterkind, President of the Eau Claire County Snowmobile Association, says those people don’t accurately represent all riders.
"Why are these guys doing it? I have no idea,” he said. "It reflects badly on snowmobiling. But, snowmobiling is a great sport."
He added, “If you see ducks out there you aren't going to run them over. I mean, nobody in their right mind would be out there chasing ducks. If they're in their way you can holler at them, whatever, I'm sure the ducks are going to move."
Bill Yearman, Conservation Warden for the Department of Natural Resources, says snowmobilers have killed animals in the past – but never in these numbers.
"The DNR takes it very seriously, of course, anytime animals are killed,” Yearman said. "These are just animals that were killed and left to rot or lay on the ice."
Still, he says the actions of a few shouldn’t change your opinion of other riders.
"This is not the average sportsman. This is not the average snowmobiler or person who recreates,” Yearman said. “It is someone who apparently doesn't have real good regard for wildlife."
"When you look around, who owns snowmobiles? Your neighbor owns snowmobiles. Is he an idiot? I don't think so," added Vetterkind. “Not everybody's out there trying to kill animals."
Police have identified suspects in two of those three animal killings.
Yearman says killing waterfowl could get you multiple federal charges and hundreds in fines.
