Lake Holcombe Schools is one of nine in the state chosen to be a part of the "What Moves U Challenge."
From jumping jacks to sit ups to crunchies, it doesn't matter to these kids how they move, but why.
"It's a way to raise, get money for the school. Because in these rough times you need
money. It's not like it's ‘Oh I found a million dollars on the floor I'll pick it up’,” says 5th grade competitor Jessica Birch.
So the students have to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. But Gym Teacher Tim Sime says they want to win! So they're encouraging students to work double time.
"Our goal for each student is at least 120 minutes a day," Sime says.
And the kids say it's not tough to do.
"If you're in a sport or it's really nice outside it's not really that hard," says 7th grade competitor Morgan Webster.
Sime says 80 minute gym classes help, along with active lesson plans.
"The kids go up and tell a story and they act it out while they're in the classroom," he says.
And they're even given homework!
"Instead of just watching TV for 4 hours, they can just watch it for 3 hours and exercise the other hour," says 5th grade competitor Will Hattamer.
The kids add up their minutes and keep track of them on a score board in their classrooms.
The school with the most minutes averaged per student wins the challenge.
"I think we have a good possibility to win this challenge," says 7th grade competitor Kory Jiskra.
"I'm hopin'. I'm really hopin'. We're working hard," Sime says.
The challenge started today and will run for 4 weeks. They turn in their results and wait to see if they won the gym equipment. Sime says he just hopes this will instill some life-long healthy habits for the students.
