A former women's hockey player at St. Mary's in Winona and at Buffalo State was among the victims in Thursday’s crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407.

St. Mary's University learned that 24-year-old Madeline Linn Loftus was on the plane. She was heading to Buffalo for a weekend reunion of female hockey players.

She graduated from St. Mary's in 2006.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the flight to nose-dive into a suburban Buffalo house Thursday night. But there are signs that weather might have been a factor.

The commuter plane was heading for a landing when it went down in light snow and fog five miles short of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. There was no mayday call from the pilot before the crash. But afterward, at least two pilots reported they had been picking up ice on their wings.
