Starting April 1st, the price of cigarettes around the country will increase by $1.01 per pack.
On Tuesday, the Eau Claire Tobacco Shop was full of customers trying to take advantage of the last day of lower prices. The price hike is the the single largest federal tobacco tax increase ever. The increase is expected to help finance a major expansion of health insurance for children.
The Health Department says it will prevent more than 900,000 smoking-related deaths, keep almost 2-million kids from smoking, and encourage almost 1.5 million adult smokers to quit.
