WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- Only 6% of Wisconsin's eligible voters bothered to cast a ballot in Tuesday's primary.
That's one reason one state lawmaker says it's time to move the so-called spring elections involving nonpartisan races to the fall.
Democratic Assemblyman Gary Sherman of Port Wing is proposing a constitutional amendment to make the switch. He says it is undemocratic and expensive to hold elections with such low turnouts.
There was only one statewide race to decide Tuesday, a five candidate primary for state superintendent of public instruction. The top two vote-getters, deputy state superintendent Tony Evers and virtual schools advocate Rose Fernandez, will advance to the April general election.
Unofficial results show 253,996 people voted in the primary out of 4.3 million people eligible to vote.
