Crews were called Monday to stop a spill of 8,000 gallons of fertilizer

The leak was noticed Monday morning by workers at the Arcadia Co-Op.

Traffic was shut down in the area temporarily and students at Arcadia Elementary were advised to stay inside.

Crews from the DNR, Arcadia Fire, and Glencoe Fire were able to stop the liquid nitrogen leak by applying loads of sand.

The DNR says the fertilizer was soaked up by the sand or soaked into the ground.

“I predict that what will happen is, the contaminated soil will be removed, and then it will disposed of as hazardous materials. It's a really common practice in spills like this,” says DNR Conservation Warden Robin Barnhardt.

Arcadia Police say no one had to evacuate and there were no injuries from the spill.
