Wisconsin now has the nation's toughest regulations on companies that use traveling sales crews to sell products.
The new law comes in response to a 1999 crash near Janesville that killed seven members of a traveling magazine sales crew and injured five.
It's called "Malinda's Law" in honor of crash victim Malinda Turvey of Verona, whose father has pushed for action on the issue. Parents of Malinda and another victim and a young woman left paralyzed in the crash watched as Governor Jim Doyle signed the law yesterday.
The rules apply to sales workers who travel in pairs of two or more and stay overnight away from home. Among other things, companies would have to register with the state and pass criminal background checks.
