A criminal charge has been reduced for a former standout athlete from Wisconsin accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in Virginia.
The Newport News Daily Press reports 22-year-old Darren Mackie now faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Mackie was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Caitlin Trask. The Daily Press says prosecutors reduced the charge because there was no evidence of malice.
Mackie told police he accidentally shot Trask in the back of the head with a handgun at his apartment in Newport News. Mackie is in the Navy and stationed on the USS Kearsarge in Norfolk. Trask was also in the Navy and stationed on the USS Eisenhower.
Mackie graduated from Cadott High High School in Cadott, Wis., in 2005.
