Another scam is hitting Western Wisconsin in the form of a check sent through the mail. Black River Falls police say it's just one of thousands of scams going on, but several people in Black River Falls have been taken.

And Angela Middleton of Black River Falls says she almost got caught up in the scam. She says she received a phone call about a week ago, telling her she'd be getting a check in the mail. A few days later the nearly $3,000 check arrived with a letter using Manpower’s name and logo --saying she had been selected as a mystery shopper. She had to cash the check, and send most of it back in a money gram, and she could keep the rest.

Middleton's bank refused to cash the check, but Middleton says she feels hurt, “It crushes all your dreams and your hopes ya know? What are you supposed to do?”

Angela Middleton has a lot of dreams. And a big wish list. She says she would like to, “Get fencing around my yard so my dog doesn't get hit, I’d like to build a garden, get a chicken coop, pigs, things to survive on ya know? When times get tough.”

Times are tough, and Middleton knows that all too well. She and her husband have been on disability for years, and cash is hard to come by. She says, “It hurt deep down inside, because I mean when your on a certain income and don't have it and your hopin' this check is good, even if you do have to pay part of it back.”

Luckily for Middleton, her bank told her it was a scam before she cashed the check. So, while she's not out any money, she still feels cheated. She says, “It's rotten for people to do that to people, ya know, I don't think its right.

A spokesperson from manpower says the company has been aware of the scam for about six weeks now, and its legal team is working on the matter.

The Black River Falls Police Chief says this type of scam is widespread, but hard to track --because many of these scams originate overseas.
