A Crawford County sheriff's deputy saw smoke coming from a barn fire just after 2:30 Saturday morning while on patrol in the Seneca Township.
Sheriff Jerry Moran says the smoke was coming from a dairy barn that was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived.
He say the barn is a total loss.
Forty cows and 3 calves died in the fire.
Sheriff Moran says the owner had recently purchased the property.
