Man Hosts Cancer Fundraiser; Charged With Keeping The Money

Kandiyohi County prosecutors in Willmar, Minnesota charged a 34-year-old Minneapolis man with hosting a fundraiser for a friend with cancer, then keeping the money.

Ryan Albert Stark of Minneapolis made his first court appearance on Monday on felony charges of theft by swindle and theft. He was released on his own recognizance.

A working telephone number could not be found for him Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege the children of a woman who died of cancer in 2006 were supposed to get the $5,000 in proceeds from a benefit organized that year by Stark and others.

The grandmother of the woman's children reported the alleged theft in November after one of her granddaughters tried to get some of the benefit money.
