Blugold Trio Goes Online for an Inside Look into Softball Program
The UW-Eau Claire softball team is taking their quest to defend the Division III national championship worldwide. Head Coach Leslie Huntington and a pair of her players have taken the diamond online in a unique way, connecting the program with a bigger audience in the process.

Blugolds Catcher Bekki Kidnie spends a lot of time behind home plate, and on home row.
"I am a hoot, I can't deny, " said Kidnie.
Kidnie and designated player Kristi Doucette co-author their own blog on ncaa.com. The NCAA asked the Blugolds if they had a couple volunteers, and the duo stepped up to the plate.
"We'll each do one paragraph and then I'll do a paragraph, and then she'll do a paragraph, and then we sit down and read it out loud to each other, " said Kidnie.
It's actually been a lot of fun," said Doucette. "We sit there at night. We'll type and we'll laugh about it."
And now, their coach has logged on, too.
I actually did the blog all by myself," said UW-Eau Claire Softball Head Coach Leslie Huntington.
Huntington says blogging is another tool coaches can use to reach out to potential recruits by giving them an inside look at the program.
"Recruiting is about building relationships, " said Huntington. "It's just a way that recruits or prospects or anybody for that matter can kind of get a feel for the personality of the program, the culture of the program, and a little bit about me and hopefully make them a little bit more comfortable when they come in as freshmen."
In this era of professional athletes texting from the sidelines and Twittering during halftime, you won't see either of the girls with their laptops in the dugout. However, the blogs do give the program more profile, and give glimpse into the daily grind of being a college athlete.
We basically just talk about the team and our experiences and how great it is to be a part of this program," said Doucette.
And if you're keeping score at home, the blog gets every run, lots of hits, and the occasional spelling error.
"Once, I think Kidnie spelled 'Tucson' wrong," said Doucette.
"We don't care about grammar or anything, we're not writing it for English class," said Kidnie. "So, it's just kind of fun to just blog, literally, to just write whatever you feel like.
