(AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is planning several events this week to mark the 39th anniversary of Earth Day -- an annual focus on environmental awareness started by the late Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson.

A DNR crew from Eau Claire will lead an urban bike trail cleanup. Grade school students will help plant treats at Buckhorn State Park. The kindergarten class from Winter Elementary School will plant sunflower seeds that later will be transplanted at the Tuscobia Trailhead in Winter.

Next Saturday, Havenwoods State Forest and Environmental Awareness Center in Milwaukee is hosting a teach-in about living green. It will include unique ways to help the environment, such as making envelopes from old calendars. An eco-scavenger hunt is also planned.

There is also an Earth Day Celebration at Owen Park in Eau Claire on Saturday, April 25 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For an event schedule, click on the link below.
