For Ladysmith native and former Wisconsin Badgers defensive lineman Mike Newkirk, he hopes to be an active participant in this weekend's NFL draft, and while Newkirk was not invited to the NFL's combine in Indianapolis, he did take part in the Badgers' pro day last month and has been working out in Atlanta at former defensive lineman's Chuck Smith's camp.
Newkirk says his goal is not just to get drafted this weekend, but ultimately to make a 53-man roster. When he was kid, Mike dreamed of playing in the NFL. Newkirk worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals last week and has also been contacted by the San Francisco 49'ers. Mike had 59 tackles, including 33 solos and four sacks during his senior season with the Badgers. Newkirk says he's hopeful that he'll get a chance to play on the defensive line in the NFL.
Mike Newkirk/NFL Draft Hopeful: "I still think I can play defensive tackle, a 3-technique, play some out at end, a guy that can play at both positions. Probably not someone who can play behind the line, didn't think I ever fit in there, I felt like I was watching the game a little too much, then when I had my hand in the dirt. But I can go where ever a team needs me, or do what's the best fit for their team. I have an open mind, but my first option for myself is to prove I can play defensive tackle."
